Korea – Sri Lanka Mahaviharaya is the first Sri Lankan Tradition Theravada Buddhist Temple which is expected to build in South Korea. The idea of establishing the Sri Lankan temple in South Korea was first proposed by the Sri-Lankan community in Ansan area. For the fulfillment of this task they form an association called “Dhamma Friends” in 2012 November. Initially “Dhamma Friends” idea was to establish the temple in a small rented building in Ansan area and conduct religious services. Keeping this in mind they started fund raising process in January 2013 with lot of dedication and hard work. As time goes on more and more Sri Lankan and South Korean people all over the South Korea joined “Dhamma Friends” and it become a place for Sri Lankan community to taking care of their own customs. With the expansion of association, the “Dhamma Friend” thought that they have to build the temple with Sri Lankan identity in a suitable location due the historical importance of this task. Not only the temple, they thought of building a Sri Lankan Cultural Center together with the temple for sharing Sri Lankan Culture with South Korea and the World. Now “Dhamma Friends” are in planning of constructing Korea – Sri Lanka Mahaviharaya in a more systematic manner. In doing so they are collaborating with Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism and some local and international organizations. They expected to complete the project within 10 years. While construction project is progress, members of “Dhamma Friends” also engage in practicing of Buddhist activities for their spiritual development as well as taking care of social welfare of the Sri Lankan community in South Korea.
